Pupil Sport Premium Grant
For the academic year 2023/24, Higher Openshaw Community School received a total allocation of £18,850. The funding was used to support a whole-school development focus on raising the profile of PE, increasing participation, and ensuring all pupils access high-quality PE and physical activity, both within and beyond the curriculum.
This work was led by the school’s Physical Education Leader, Kirsten Grace.
Following pupil voice consultations, the school identified several key priorities:
The introduction of Sports Leaders to champion physical activity.
A broader range of after-school clubs, particularly introducing pupils to sports they had not previously accessed.
Enhanced opportunities to be physically active during breaktimes and lunchtimes.
Embedding high-quality teaching and learning in PE through coaching, training, and planning support.
The funding was allocated and used in line with the five key indicators set out by the DfE:
Engagement in Regular Physical Activity
Installation of playground zoning, timetabled breaktime activities, and introduction of the Daily Mile.
Use of Sports Leaders and coaches to increase participation.
All pupils participated in Forest School.
Raising the Profile of PE and Sport Across the School
Introduction of weekly achievement awards and celebration assemblies.
Development of a sports display wall and dedicated website space.
Medals and certificates awarded at Sports Day to promote competition.
Increased Confidence and Skills of Staff
Ongoing partnership with Dream Big to deliver high-quality PE lessons.
PE Passport planning tools supported teaching consistency.
Training for staff on working with SEND pupils and emotional regulation strategies.
Broader Experience of Sports and Activities
Free clubs delivered year-round.
Outdoor and adventurous activities, especially supporting Year 6 transitions.
Taster days for less mainstream sports.
Increased Participation in Competitive Sport
Intra-school competitions and structured small-sided games embedded in the school day.
Increased access to competitive sport during the day, including targeted girls-only sessions.
Recognition of performance, resilience, and teamwork.

Additional clubs, staff training, and Forest School access
Pupils now have broader access to sports, including previously unavailable opportunities.
The playground environment and lunchtime provision support greater physical activity.
Staff confidence has improved through targeted CPD and coaching partnerships.
Pupil engagement has increased in both competitive and non-competitive sport.
Targeted support has enhanced access for pupils with SEND and those with lower physical activity levels.
The improvements are designed to be sustainable, with structured use of space and timetabling of outdoor equipment, embedded PE planning tools, and the development of pupil leadership through Sports Leaders. The school will continue to build on this work in 2024/25, with a further £18,666 allocated.
