Our Library

At Higher Openshaw Community School we firmly believe in creating a ‘Reading for Pleasure’ culture.  We encourage our children to read at every opportunity they get.  Whether this be comics, newspapers, fiction, non-fiction or E-Books,  we believe reading provides opportunities for pupils to reach and achieve their true potential.

During the summer of 2016 we were lucky enough to be able to build our own, unique library space for the children. They are now able to borrow books from here, our vast in-class libraries or choose books as part of our wider reading schemes.

Here are some pictures of our library journey:

Since the building work, cataloguing and training was completed and the children and families at Higher Openshaw Community School have been enjoying library sessions.

Every class has a timetabled slot within the school day.  The library is open every night after school and lunchtimes so every child gets the chance to choose a new book or renew their current one.

We advertised and interviewed pupils for the role of ‘Junior Librarians’ we received a huge amount of interest but after lots of deliberation, here is our team!

On Monday 12th September 2016 our library was officially opened by Mr Bob Wright, our chair of governors and Miss Emma Taylor, our local councillor.  It was an extremely exciting day!

The children also have a vast amount of online books to read through ourpartnership with reading cloud.  They can download books to read at home,

comment on our blogs and review books. Teachers and parents can also use it!

We hope that the children, staff and parents at Higher Openshaw Community School continue to develop their passion for reading for many years to come!
